Flat walls before the first coat goes on
Paint does not hide a bad wall, it highlights it. Cracks, dents, water stains and lumpy past repairs all show more once there is fresh, even colour across them. We make the surface flat first and check it in raking light.

What this covers
If it is on this list it is part of a standard quote. If it is not, ask, because it is usually still something we do.
- Settlement and hairline cracks
- Nail pops and screw holes
- Dents, knocks and impact damage
- Water stain sealing
- Cornice repair and replacement
- Bad previous patch repairs
How we approach it
Cut out, do not skim over
A crack filled on the surface reopens. We cut it out, fill properly and tape where movement is likely, so it stays closed.
Seal water stains
Water marks bleed through waterborne paint no matter how many coats. They get a stain-blocking sealer before anything else.
Sand flat and check the light
Every repair sanded back and checked under raking light, because that is how you will see it once the wall is one colour.
Spot prime every repair
Filler soaks up topcoat differently to the wall around it. Unprimed patches flash through as dull marks. We prime them all.
Common questions
Why do my cracks keep coming back?
Almost always because they were filled on the surface rather than cut out, or because the underlying movement was never addressed. We cut out and tape where movement is likely, and tell you honestly when a crack is structural and needs more than a painter.
Can you match my existing cornice?
Usually. There are a limited number of common profiles and we can source most of them. Older or ornate profiles sometimes need a specialist, and we will say so rather than fitting something that does not match.
Do I need the whole wall repainted after a repair?
Generally yes, to the nearest corners. Spot painting a repair almost always shows as a patch, because of both sheen and colour differences.
